This book documents one of Cornwall’s most famous lifeboat stations, Fowey, which last year celebrated 150 years of life-saving. The station traces its origins to the small village of Polkerris, on the county’s south coast, where the Royal National Lifeboat Institution established a lifeboat station in 1859.
In the 1920s operations were moved to neighbouring Fowey, a picturesque town as well as a busy. A motor lifeboat first entered service here in 1928, and in 1995 an inshore lifeboat was delivered to compliment the all-weather lifeboat.
Ready to battle against the elements in times of need, the volunteer crews and their lifeboats have undertaken many courageous and difficult rescues. Today, the station operates two of the most modern lifeboats, a 14m Trent and a D class inflatable inshore lifeboat, which are ready to put to sea to help others in distress.
This book tells the history of the lifeboats that have served at Fowey and Polkerris. Many rescues are described, with some outstanding colour images helping to tell the story.
